Explosion in Murcia? Massive bang from military aircraft prompts calls to 112
The emergency services received numerous calls from concerned citizens about a loud explosion this Thursday afternoon
Several people in the Region of Murcia were startled this Thursday afternoon, November 28, by a loud noise coming from the sky. Such was the magnitude of the sound that it generated dozens of calls to the Emergency Coordination Centre 112 to alert them as to what had happened.
However, the offending ‘boomer’ was just a military-grade plane that flew through the skies over Murcia as part of a NATO training exercise.
The Learjet 35A left the Los Llanos air base in Albacete and flew over Calasparra, Mula, Pliego and Mazarrón until it entered the airspace over the where it made numerous turns and circles in the sky.
After this exercise, it returned to land to fly over the Sierra de Carrascoy, Murcia capital and Fortuna, among other towns. Some users on social networks, in response to the confusion, also asked if it had been an explosion.
In the province of Alicante yesterday, a factory explosion killed three people and injured eight more, but thankfully the loud booming noise in Murcia today was nothing of the sort.
According to Flightradar24, the Learjet 35A is developed by the German company Gesellschaft für Flugzieldarstellung mbH (GFD). Its main purpose is to act as a target ‘drone’ in military simulations and tests, helping to assess air and missile defence systems and allowing armed forces to train in realistic scenarios.
This was not the only similar episode experienced in recent days in the Region of Murcia; last Monday loud buzzing sounds were also heard from the sky. They were also military aircraft passing overhead, in some cases breaking the sound barrier.
