Glorieta Juan Carlos I, Mula
The Glorieta square in Mula is full of character
The Glorieta in Mula is an oasis of cooling green shade, with established, mature trees, plants, seating areas and quiet corners, surrounded by a blend of historical and contemporary buildings.
At one end is the historic monastery and church of San Francisco, and behind it runs the Calle de San Francisco, one of the streets containing houses built by the town's nobility in past centuries.
The Convent of San Francisco houses the tourist information office, an ideal spot to stop off and pick up a map.
This is a good starting point for those planning to walk into the old quarter as there is generally parking nearby, and the Plaza has a couple of atmospheric cafés serving drinks and tapas - especially recommended is the tapas bar in the corner which has covered external seating, particularly during the autumn mushroom tapas celebrations. This is a very pleasant place to enjoy a coffee before or after some sightseeing (try the cod topped with sweet pine nuts and onion, its superb!).
At one point there were plans to re-model the Glorieta, creating a modern, contemporary space, but fortunately the economic crisis spared it from a character assassination and for now, visitors can enjoy its old-fashioned charm and peaceful atmosphere.
