Andalucía suspends classes this Wednesday in 77 municipalities across Almería, Cádiz and Málaga
Warnings for driving rain, strong winds and dangerous coastal conditions have led to school closures in 77 towns and cities across the region
Classes have been suspended this Wednesday January 28 in 77 municipalities across parts of Almería, Cádiz and Málaga provinces due to the severe weather brought by Storm Joseph.
The decision was taken by the Junta de Andalucía following advice from the Civil Protection Emergency Advisory Committee. According to the regional government, face-to-face classes will not take place in 36 towns in the Almanzora Valley and Los Vélez areas of Almería.

Schools and colleges will also close in 26 municipalities in the Ronda area of Málaga and 15 in the Grazalema area of Cádiz. Across the whole region, schools have been told to cancel outdoor activities and playground breaks.
The orange weather alert has been extended to the whole of Andalucía for this Wednesday, while a red alert, indicating maximum risk, has been declared for the Almanzora Valley and Los Vélez in inland Almería due to the expected intensity of the weather.
The regional Minister for Health, the Presidency and Emergencies, Antonio Sanz, also highlighted concerns about the Guadarranque River in the Campo de Gibraltar area of Cádiz. Heavy rainfall and water releases from dams have caused river levels to rise sharply, leading to the evacuation of homes closest to the riverbank. Preventive measures remain in place in case the situation worsens.

Local town councils have been asked to close public parks for the day and residents are being urged to avoid outdoor activities. Authorities have also appealed to the public to follow safety advice and act responsibly during the severe weather.
On Tuesday 27, Storm Joseph led to almost 1,000 incidents across Andalucía. The most serious was the death of a woman in Torremolinos, Málaga, after she was struck by a falling palm tree during strong winds.
In Jaén, videos are circulating of the giant billboard-sized sign from a Dia supermarket which toppled over, crashing down onto the carpark below. Incredibly, no one was harmed in that incident.
