Camposol rambla latest after a working meeting between authorities
Mayor of Mazarron has working meeting with water authority president with the focus on damage caused by the recent DANA the Camposol rambla issue
Following on from a meeting on November 27 involving officials from the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) and Mazarrón Council more information has been forthcoming about the latest situation regarding the Rambla de los Aznares in an interview with the Mayor of Mazarrón.
At the meeting on November 27 held at the CHS headquarters in Murcia, were Mayor of Mazarrón, Ginés Campillo, the Councillor for Urban Planning and Infrastructure, Jesús García, and the Mazarrón municipal engineer. Representing the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS), were the President, Mario Urrea, and the Commissioner of Waters, Francisco Javier García. The CHS is the water authority responsible for the Segura River basin which covers all of the region of Murcia plus part of the province of Alicante and part of the region of Almeria.
During the meeting they not only discussed the damage caused by the recent DANA in the municipality of Mazarrón, with the president of the river authority indicating that action would be taken shortly, via emergency works, also an update on the Camposol rambla situation was part of the talks and an “important step forward” was metioned.
Two days later on November 29, the Mayor gave an interview with a member of the editorial team at Murcia Today, Mazarrón Today and Camposol Today, during which he answered questions about the current rambla situation and expanded on the an “important step forward”:
Murcia Today: According to an official press release an “important step forward” has been taken with regard to the flood-prone Rambla de los Aznares which currently runs through the area. Would you care to explain what that development is?
Ginés Campillo: Certainly. We at the Town Hall have been working on the project to divert the course of the Rambla around the edge of Camposol (option 4 as identified by the round table group addressing the problem), and when that project is complete the CHS [the water infrastructures authority in the Segura basin] has agreed to take on responsibility for the work which will make this a reality.
MT: And when is that likely to happen?
GC: We hope to have the project design completed in approximately 6 months, after which the timescale for the necessary work will be decided on by the CHS.
MT: Are the Camposol Residents’ Association and the regional government involved?
GC: Not in this phase of the project, no. Town Hall and CHS technicians are working together to ensure that they are in agreement on the details of the project, and when this is finalized a meeting of the “Camposol Round Table” (including residents’ associations and the regional government) will be called to present the project.
The Rambla de los Aznares, a dry riverbed and runoff channel that runs through Sector D of the Camposol urbanisation, has long been problematic, administratively as well as physically, particularly in 2014 when after a severe rain event known as a gota fria or DANA the rambla flooded causing extensive damage to property in its path. A number of solutions concerning the re-routing of the rambla have been proposed over the years and a round table consisting of the CHS, Mazarrón Council and the regional government of Murcia was set up to agree on a solution.
