September 20 and 21 Open days at the 4,000-year-old La Bastida archaeological site in Totana
A chance to see the Argaric “Troy of the West” just outside the town of Totana
One of the most fascinating ancient archaeological sites of south-eastern Spain is La Bastida, which was an Argaric settlement just outside the modern town of Totana as long as 4,200 years ago. So advanced is some of the construction techniques that this settlement has been nicknamed “The Troy of the West” by some experts, although exactly how the Argaric culture came to be in possession of such advanced technology is not known.
This year the annual open mornings at the site are being held on September 20 and 21, with guided visits and ceramic workshops available free of charge to anyone interested. The archaeological tours take place on both mornings from 9.00 to 12.00 (with group sizes limited to 30), while the workshops are held at the same time.
Bookings should be made through the Totana tourist office (telephone 968 418153, email turismo@totana.es) and the registration period is now open.
For more local events, news and visiting information go to the Totana section of Murcia Today.
