The Casa de las Contribuciones in Totana

A Modernist building alongside the Town Hall and parish church of Totana

The Casa de las Contribuciones is a Modernist building which stands alongside the Plaza de la Constitución in Totana, providing a contrast with the architecture of the parish church of Santiago and the main Town Hall building in the same square.

This is one of a large number of buildings which sprang up in numerous towns and cities of the Region of Murcia in the late 19^th and early 20^th centuries. In this instance, though, it was not built by a wealthy merchant or an industrial family, as was often the case in Cartagena and Murcia, but in order to collect and administer municipal property taxes: hence the name by which it is commonly known, the “Contributions House”.(see History of Totana)

Among the eclectic architectural features are the crenellated walls, the profusely decorated columns, a sumptuous first-floor balcony and the small tower or turret, while the interior contains a central patio area to provide light and airiness. The building now houses Town Hall offices and is not open for public visits.
