Weekly market in Guardamar del Segura on Wednesday
Markets are atmospheric and well-priced, with a wide range of produce on offer
Guardamar del Segura is a fairly small town but is independent in terms of the shopping opportunities, and only those who feel the need for a mall experience will find it necessary to shop out of town for everyday items.
The weekly market is a relatively large affair for a town of only 17,000 or so inhabitants, and occupies the streets between the Town Hall and the castle on the western side of the town centre.
The market is held every Wednesday morning, and features a wide range of foodstuffs, clothes, shoes, household items, textiles, plants and a myriad of sundry items. In summer it is extremely well attended as visitors to Guardamar from all over Europe join the Spanish to purchase the fresh produce on sale, which is generally extremely well-priced when compared to supermarket prices. There are also many opportunities to buy directly from bodegas and producers of artisan meat and cheese products, nuts, crisps, sweets and nibbles all sold by weight, buckets of olives marinated in a host of different herbs, freshly pickled capers, aubergines and chillies, as well as roasted chickens, bread and cakes.
On market days the town centre is extremely crowded, and driving and parking become more difficult than usual: the underground car park in the Plaza de la Constitución, where the Town Hall is located, is the best (and almost the only) parking option in the centre of town at these times.
There is also an arts and crafts market on the Paseo Ingeniero Mira, which is the road running up from the beach to the Town Hall, between the dunes and the Parque Reina Sofía. During the summer (from April to September) this market opens every day at 18.30 and remains open until around midnight, whilst in the winter months it opens only on Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 12.00 to 20.00. The number of stalls varies during the year.
For those who prefer to do their shopping in large malls, options include the Habaneras shopping centre in Torrevieja (15 minutes by car), Zenia Boulevard in Orihuela Costa (25 minutes), L’Aljub in Elche (25 minutes) and Dos Mares in San Pedro del Pinatar (35 minutes).
More general information about Guardamar del Segura is included in the dedicated Guardamar del Segura municipality section, accessed via the map box at the bottom of every page. Guardamar is part of the Comarca Vega Baja, Alicante province within the Comunidad Valenciana (Autonomous community of Valencia).
