Works contracted awarded to reopen the path to Mula castle
Progress continues to be made towards reopening the Castillo de los Vélez to the public
Little by little, the Town Hall of Mula is progressing towards the aim of making the historic Castillo de los Vélez accessible to visitors, having worked for years to acquire the ownership of the monument and now facing the task of making it safe to visit.
The latest step last week was the awarding of a 200,000-euro project for work on access to different areas, including the central courtyards and the walls of the fortress. As well as work on the path up to the castle, there is also to be a new staircase to the entry chamber and the restoration of some of the walls, all using materials similar to those which were used when the castle was first built in the 16th century.
By creating a safe route through the ruined fortification, this represents another step towards making the castle accessible for visitors. However, this is just the first of a series of projects which are budgeted to cost a total of 2.6 million euros, allocated from European funding by the national government of Spain.
