Los Alcázares launches its first independent energy production cooperative
Members of the scheme in Los Alcázares can reduce their electricity bills, contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and join in a participative cooperative
The Town Hall of Los Alcázares has this week given its approval to the official registration of the “Comunidad Energética de Los Alcázares”, the Energy Community of Los Alcázares, an initiative which has been carefully managed over the last few months in collaboration with the Foundation for Sustainable Development.
All members of the community are invited to join the initiative and around 20 have already done so: these individuals will this be the first to take part in what councillor Pedro José Sánchez calls an “innovative way of generating and consuming energy”.
The way the community works is quite simple: the members of the scheme pay jointly for the installation of solar panels on a plot of land, after which they then share the energy produced. In this way each of them can reduce their own electricity bills significantly and take advantage of EU grants for such schemes.
There are also positive environmental and social consequences involved: this kind of move towards self-sufficiency reduces out dependence on the establish energy suppliers, reduces the emission of greenhouse gases and promotes social cohesion through the formation of a participative cooperative.
Registration is still open to new members and residents are invited to contact the relevant Town Hall department by email at losalcazares@comunidadesenergeticasrm.es.
