The 'Danish Ikea' chain stealing the homeware crown in Spain
The retail giant plans to open more than 300 new stores across Spain and Portugal
It looks like there’s just no stopping JYSK, the homeware giant commonly referred to as the 'cheap Ikea' or the 'Danish Ikea.' Plans are already afoot to open 300 new stores throughout Spain in the coming years, alongside a huge logistics centre to serve as the central distribution hub for its products.
Like the Swedish chain, JYSK specialises in selling home furnishings and products, but it’s often far cheaper than its already affordable rival.
In Spain, JYSK first marketed itself as similar to IKEA, but with a far more straight-forward shopping experience. If you think ‘enormous warehouse’ when you think IKEA, then JYSK is much more your traditional retail store.
It’s a formula that clearly works and JYSK already has around 174 stores in Spain, out of more than 3,500 spread across some fifty countries.
The Danish chain was founded by Lars Larsen on his home soil back in 1979; however, it didn't arrive in Spain until 2009, when it opened its first store in Cartagena. Since then, the business has become well-established in both Spain and Portugal, where it already has 34 stores and plans to open around 80 more, although it is still far from achieving the revenue of its Swedish rival.However, this expansion also includes a project to create a large logistics centre in Almenara (Castellón), which should expand its reach. The facility will cover approximately 300,000 square metres and will become the central distribution hub for products throughout the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco.
Its opening is planned for 2028 and it’s estimated to create more than 200 jobs.
