Altorreal golf course in Molina de Segura
The course at Altorreal is one of the longest established in Murcia
The golf course at Altorreal, in the municipality of Molina de Segura and only a few minutes’ drive away from the north of the city of Murcia, is the furthest inland of any of those located in the Region of Murcia, and despite the fact that it opened under 30 years ago is also one of the oldest apart from the two main courses at La Manga Club.
The course, designed by Dave Thomas, officially opened in 1994, although parts of it were open beforehand, and has thus had well over two decades to settle for the trees to grow and become established. The result is one of the courses with most character in the Costa Cálida, and for golf tourists a trip inland from the coastal courses is strongly recommended: driving times are no more than 40 minutes from San Javier airport, or 50 minutes from Alicante-Elche.
Par for the course, which measures 6,171 metres (6,749 yards) from the white tees, is 71, with four par 3s and three par 5s. Yellow tees can also be used, shortening the total distance by around 150 metres, while lady golfers face distances of 5,508 metres or 5,039 metres.
Altorreal is in the hills outside Molina de Segura, and there are plenty of undulations on both greens and fairways, while water is a feature on the 1st, 6th, 9th, 12th, 13th and 18th. The most challenging hole is generally held to be the sixth, a long par five which follows a par three and presents a narrow fairway and a well-protected green, while another difficulty for those with a natural fade is the downhill dog-leg on the 13th, where the green is again protected by water.
Altorreal is a large residential development, and there are built-up areas alongside many of the holes, but the location also provides some admirable panoramic views to take players’ minds off the challenges which lie in front of them!
Among the other facilities available at Altorreal are a driving range and practice green, good parking, tuition, showers and changing rooms, golf carts and trolley hire, a golf shop, a gym and physiotherapeutic massages. There is also a restaurant and bar in the attractive clubhouse, the balcony of which looks out over the 9th and 18th holes, enabling those who have successfully negotiated them to enjoy the trials and tribulations of others as they attempt to avoid the water hazards!
How to get to Altorreal golf club
Altorreal is best accessed from the A-30 motorway, taking the exit at kilometre 130 and heading east towards the “urbanizaciones” rather than west into Molina de Segura. The road leads directly into the residential area, with the golf club well signposted: turn right at the roundabout at the entrance to Altorreal, and after around 400 metres take the left fork to reach the clubhouse.Address: Avenida del Golf, 70, Urbanización Altorreal, 30506 Molina de Segura, Región de Murcia
