June 13 and 14 Folk music and dancing festival in Totana
The 15th edition of the annual Festival Nacional de Folclore y el Desfile Güertero
One of the highlights of the cultural year in Totana is taking place on 13th and 14th June with the holding of the 15th Festival Nacional de Folclore y and the traditional “Desfile Güertero” parade, with the weekend featuring different folk tradition groups from all over the south-east of Spain.
The program for the weekend includes the following:
Friday June 13
9.30 to 13.30: Exhibitions open to the public in the Plaza de la Constitución, allowing everyone to get to know some of the most important aspects of the traditional “huertano” lifestyle in the rural countryside of the lowlands of Murcia.
20.30: The official opening ceremony of the “Terrenico Güertero”, an area devoted to the recreation of a small “huerta” (agricultural smallholding) and to various activities for members of the public.
21.00: The 5th “Mantellina” competition, with entrants attempting to make the best version of this traditional drink which includes sweet fruit wine, aniseed, honey and lemon. Bottles can be entered until 21.55.
22.00: A show by “cuadrilla” folk groups from El Raiguero, Henares, Las Torres de Cotillas and the Auroros de Lorca.
Saturday June 14
10.30 to 14.00: The exhibitions reopen in the Plaza de la Constitución.
19.00: Official reception at the Town Hall for the participating groups.
20.00: The “Desfile Güertero” parade, featuring traditional costumes, animals, floats, etc. Route: Calle Alberto Gray Peinado, Calle Ángel Novelé, Glorieta, Calle Juan de la Cierva, Juan XXIII, San Antonio, Plaza de la Constitución.
22.00: The main performances from Coros y Danzas “Ciudad de Totana”, Peña La Mantellina (Totana, Murcia), Coros y Danzas La Huarceña (Almería), Grupo de Coros y Danzas Virgen del Rosario (Torre Pacheco, Murcia) and Grupo Folclórico “Villa de Madrid” (Madrid).
