Mercadona confirms opening date for new Cabo de Palos store
The €5.2 million supermarket will replace the existing store and include hundreds of parking spaces

The new Mercadona supermarket in Cabo de Palos now has an official opening date and will open on Monday June 1. The new store has been built to replace the company's current supermarket nearby, which has become too small due to strong customer demand throughout the year, especially during the busy summer months.
The development cost more than €5.2 million and has been built on a 13,277 square metre site. The new supermarket includes different levels for shopping, storage and staff areas.
The ground floor, which will house the supermarket along with storage, cold rooms, and loading bays, covers 4,168 square metres. Above it is a 337 square-metre first floor with staff facilities, including changing rooms, a break room, and outdoor terraces for equipment. The building also includes a large 8,700 square metre basement, bringing the total built area to more than 13,277 square metres.
Parking has been significantly increased. The new supermarket will have 235 parking spaces, including eight for people with reduced mobility and eight electric vehicle charging points. There will also be an additional 3,660 square metre outdoor car park with 90 more spaces, three of them adapted for disabled users.
Mercadona and Cartagena City Council have worked together on traffic management and access to the new store, as well as making sure it can operate alongside Cabo de Palos' weekly Sunday market. This has involved reorganising nearby public spaces.
Cartagena mayor Noelia Arroyo said the investment is very positive for both Cartagena and Cabo de Palos. She said it will strengthen the area's range of shops, protect existing jobs, and create new opportunities.
Mercadona confirmed that the opening of the new store will secure the jobs of the current workforce. Around 50 permanent staff from the existing supermarket will move to the new premises.
